i'm not sure where this image is originally from. i do know that i had it saved on my computer long ago. but tragedy struck and that computer passed away late last year. it was very sad. and this picture went with it. i hadn't forgotten the image though. those golden drapes are just too blessedly fine. so, imagine my delight at seeing the photograph again while perusing dress, design, & decor. the shot is beautiful for sure. the volume of that yellow and shooting into the light. mad lovely.

I just have to tell you about my "new friend with a new blog", TTAGG You're It!!! (Short for: That Tall Alaskan Guy in Georgia) It's my new favorite blog! Until tomorrow when I post about another friend's blog and then I'll have to say that it's my favorite. Which, of course, it will be. But for today it's definitely TAGG You're It!!! My favorite bit so far is when he describes "the Last Bag" and what that means. He's kind of a riot, like a little riot of funny.

I've been watching This American Life on Netflix instant watch. When I first heard a couple of years ago that they were putting the radio original onto the small screen, I had my doubts. I imagined it as embarrassingly less than pure aural form. Totally lacking. A flop, for sure. Well, good thing no one asked me because as it turns out, they can tell a story just as well with documentary film footage as with audio-recorded interviews. How about that? Who knew? But seriously. And I hear other people are into it. It's won prizes or some such. People who listen to the radio also dabble in television watching apparently. Weird. Anyhow, this week has been a good reminder of all the things I love about documentary work. I'm working on a documentary project right now, but with the parameters currently set, I think it's going to be a little more abstract than Ira Glass' three act themes. (say that 3x fast) So, anyways, that's what's up. Don't say I never post nuthin'. Next week I think I'll make it a point to post about all my old friends with new blogs and all of my new friends with old blogs. That's something to do, right? Is "old blog" sort of an oxymoron? In any case, maybe I'll think of something else to post about and surprise you.

the image above is an ad for the aluminum Emeco Navy chair which has been in production since WWdos, has four-times the strength of steel, is designed to endure torpedo-blasts, and comes with an 150-year warranty. Buying a shotty ikea knock-off would be an insult to all that is good.

to further that point: check out these videos created by Weiden + Kennedy to demonstrate the chair's durability by first repeatedly catapulting it against a wall (as seen below) and then by tossing it out of a third-story window (follow the link). It's a funny and entertaining way to advertise a chair. We are encouraged to try this at home.

So, I'm finishing up the first season of Dexter today. Watching Dexter -between sleeping, eating, and maintaining the illusion that i'm a functioning adult- sufficiently sums the way I've spent my days off this week. Not a terrible choice, considering it's turned out to be a pretty adorable show. Plus, it reminded me of images I once saw of a Showtime House that lives in a Gramercy Park brownstone, but it had been so long since I'd seen them that trying to describe was..um.. eh.. you know...um..not cutting it. (get it? cutting it? meh. nevermind. i've been over-saturated.)

In any case, now, one google search later and we can play...

movies worth seeing

Movies Worth Seeing = true to their name and reputation, this little video store is just around the corner in the Virgina Highlands. Thought I'd give them a plug since I have yet to leave disappointed. Or come back disappointed. Or how ever you want to think of it.

Getting on with it, these are last 6 movies I've seen. As it happened, they sort of progressed from world's most depressing movie to world's most cheerful movie. Take a look.



Mean Creek: Egads. 5 kids. Well, 6. Well, if nothing else...it was a beautiful day, right? I'll leave you to watch this one. Be warned. It's a really good movie. You ought to have a go at it, but know that you're not gonna be rolling in the floor laughing (rofl, rofl). Except maybe for this one line...
Sam: What do you think's going to happen, Marty? Superman's gonna fly on Earth and turn back time?
Marty: No, I don't think Superman's going to turn back time.
... it's more amusing in context. Of course.



Wendy and Lucy: Homelessness and puppy dog eyes. Painful.



The Lives of Others: Gorgeous, top to bottom. Writing, cinematography, art direction, the acting, the score. Ugh. So good.



Little Ashes: Well, what do you expect when you're a revolutionary writer in love with a repressed, eccentric painter. It will certainly be beautiful, but, uh, pretty much doomed otherwise. Hey, no one said being avant-garde in pre-civil war Spain was going to be easy. But, when is it ever?



Let the Right One In: Pfff. Sweden's version of Twilight. Kidding. Best Vampire Movie Ever. Hella good. And the voice-overs add a serendipitous touch of awesome. (the trailer make it look way scarier than it actually is, btw. it's actually a bit sweet, and more weird than scary-scary.)



Happy-Go-Lucky: Oh, what a relief. After all that... This movie is a total joy. Let's see, you know how Amelie is really darling and wonderful? Well, this is like that and maybe better. I'm telling you, pop it in when rain clouds come round and the sun will be shining again in no time. (Trust.) And, sure, I had expected as much from seeing the trailer, but I just didn't expect the fullness. The central character, Poppy, explores a range of emotions and themes as she bumps and bounces through life ever-so optimistically. You'll love her. The writing and cinematography are strong. You'll laugh, you'll feel, you'll change a little. It's a good thing.
